President Irro Receives High-Level Welcome at the Knesset During Official Israel Visit
JERUSALEM — June 16, 2026 — Somaliland President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi Irro paid an official visit Tuesday to the Israeli Parliament, the Knesset, in what observers describe as another major diplomatic breakthrough in the rapidly expanding relationship between Somaliland and Israel.
President Irro, accompanied by members of his delegation and senior Somaliland officials, was formally received at the Knesset in Jerusalem with high state honors by Speaker of the Knesset Amir Ohana and senior Israeli lawmakers. The visit formed part of Somaliland’s ongoing historic state visit to Israel following the strengthening of bilateral relations between the two governments.
In an official statement released after the meeting, President Irro described the occasion as “a historic and honorable day” for the Republic of Somaliland, emphasizing that the visit represented more than a diplomatic ceremony, but rather a significant step toward deeper international engagement and strategic cooperation.

The Somaliland leader expressed gratitude to Speaker Amir Ohana and members of the Knesset for the warm reception and high-level hospitality extended to the Somaliland delegation.
According to officials familiar with the discussions, talks focused on strengthening cooperation in diplomacy, regional security, trade, investment, innovation, parliamentary relations, and long-term strategic partnership between Somaliland and Israel.
President Irro stated that the visit to the Knesset demonstrated Somaliland’s growing international visibility and reflected increasing recognition of Somaliland’s democratic governance, political stability, and strategic importance in the Horn of Africa and Red Sea region.

The President also highlighted Somaliland’s own parliamentary history, noting that he previously served as Speaker of the Somaliland House of Representatives for more than a decade. He emphasized the importance of democratic institutions, the rule of law, and representative governance in Somaliland’s political development.
Diplomatic analysts say the symbolic significance of the visit is substantial, particularly as Somaliland continues to expand international partnerships and strengthen relations with key global allies.
Images released from the visit showed President Irro and Israeli officials walking together on the red carpet outside the Knesset building while Somaliland and Israeli flags were displayed during the welcoming ceremony — imagery widely circulated across regional and international media platforms.

The Knesset visit comes amid a broader schedule of high-level engagements during President Irro’s official trip to Israel, including meetings with senior Israeli political leaders, investors, and strategic institutions focused on economic cooperation, technology, infrastructure, maritime security, and regional stability.

Political observers believe the visit marks one of the most visible diplomatic moments in Somaliland’s modern history and further signals a new chapter in relations between Somaliland and Israel.
For Somaliland, the visit represents another step in its decades-long pursuit of expanded international engagement and global diplomatic recognition.
