JERUSALEM — Somaliland President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi Irro arrived in Israel on Sunday for a historic state visit that has drawn major international attention and marked a significant milestone in the rapidly expanding relationship between Somaliland and Israel.
President Irro was formally welcomed in Jerusalem by Israeli President Isaac Herzog at an official reception at the Israeli Presidential Residence, where the two leaders held high-level bilateral talks on diplomacy, economic cooperation, regional security, and strategic partnerships.

The visit is widely regarded as one of the most important diplomatic moments in Somaliland’s modern history following Israel’s landmark decision in December 2025 to formally recognize Somaliland as an independent state.
In a statement released after his arrival, President Irro described the visit as “historic” and praised the warm reception extended to him and the Somaliland delegation.
“I have arrived in Israel as the first President of the Republic of Somaliland to undertake a State Visit, and I am honored by the warm welcome extended by my friend, President Isaac Herzog,” President Irro said.
“For thirty-five years, the people of Somaliland have built a peaceful, democratic, and resilient nation. We asked the world: Do you see us? Israel answered first,” he added.
Israeli President Isaac Herzog also welcomed the Somaliland leader, describing the visit as a symbol of the growing partnership between the two sides.
“This historic visit symbolizes the tremendous potential for renewed partnership between our peoples,” Herzog said during the reception ceremony in Jerusalem.
President Irro was accompanied by First Lady Fardowsa Mohamed Roble and a senior Somaliland delegation that included government ministers, diplomatic officials, and advisers.
High-Level Diplomatic Talks
According to Israeli and regional media reports, discussions during the visit are expected to focus on:
Diplomatic cooperation
Trade and investment
Maritime and Red Sea security
Technology and innovation
Agriculture and water development
Energy and infrastructure partnerships
Mining and natural resources
Regional strategic cooperation
Officials familiar with the talks say Somaliland and Israel are seeking to deepen long-term cooperation across multiple sectors amid the growing geopolitical importance of the Red Sea corridor and Horn of Africa region.
Jerusalem Meetings and Official Program
Reports from Israeli media outlets indicate that President Irro’s official itinerary includes:
Meetings with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu
Bilateral talks with Israeli officials
Meetings with Israeli investors and business organizations
Visits to historical and national sites in Jerusalem
Discussions surrounding Somaliland’s diplomatic representation in Jerusalem
Israeli outlet Ynet reported that President Irro is also expected to visit:
Herzl’s grave
Yad Vashem Memorial Center
Israeli economic institutions during the visit
Expanding Somaliland–Israel Relations
Relations between Somaliland and Israel have expanded rapidly since Israel formally recognized Somaliland in December 2025, becoming the first United Nations member state to establish full diplomatic ties with the self-declared republic.
Since then:
Israel appointed an ambassador to Somaliland
Somaliland appointed its first ambassador to Israel
Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar visited Hargeisa in January 2026
Diplomatic discussions intensified regarding economic and strategic cooperation
Analysts say the relationship reflects broader geopolitical changes taking place across the Horn of Africa and the Middle East.
Strategic Importance of Somaliland
International observers increasingly view Somaliland as strategically important due to its location near:
The Red Sea
Gulf of Aden
Bab el-Mandeb Strait
The region has become increasingly significant amid growing concerns surrounding maritime security, global shipping routes, and regional instability linked to the Red Sea corridor.
Analysts say Somaliland’s strategic geography, relative stability, and expanding diplomatic outreach have contributed to increasing international attention from regional and global powers.
Abraham Accords Discussions
The visit has also intensified speculation surrounding Somaliland’s possible future alignment with the Abraham Accords framework.
While no formal agreement has been officially announced, regional analysts say discussions regarding future diplomatic and economic integration with the broader Abraham Accords framework remain part of ongoing regional diplomatic conversations.
Regional Reactions
The growing relationship between Somaliland and Israel continues to attract strong regional and international reactions.
Somalia has repeatedly opposed Israel’s recognition of Somaliland and criticized diplomatic engagement between the two sides, arguing that Somaliland remains part of Somalia under international law.
At the same time, supporters of Somaliland’s international outreach argue that the region’s democratic governance, strategic location, and relative stability justify expanded diplomatic engagement and international partnerships.
A Defining Diplomatic Moment
Political analysts across the region describe President Irro’s visit to Israel as a potentially transformative diplomatic moment that could reshape Somaliland’s international standing and influence future geopolitical dynamics across the Horn of Africa and Red Sea region.
The visit is expected to continue over several days with additional diplomatic meetings, economic discussions, and strategic consultations between Somaliland and Israeli officials.
