SL Government and Us
I would like to see us focus on one of the most important priorities facing Somaliland: lifting our people out of poverty. As more countries begin to recognize and engage with us, we must ensure that these relationships are used strategically for the benefit of our nation. Every country acts according to its own interests, and we must do the same.
We should invest heavily in training our youth and unemployed young adults in different professions and industries. We can learn from countries like Norway, which transformed itself from a poor nation into one of the world’s most prosperous through smart resource management, strong institutions, and investment in its people.
We should negotiate agreements that create long-term benefits for Somaliland, not just short-term gains. Countries like Norway prioritize locally produced goods and industries, keeping wealth circulating within their own borders. Somaliland should strive to do the same by strengthening local production, supporting businesses, and creating jobs for our own people.
Other countries also protect their workforce. In Turkey, for example, foreign investors are often required to employ local citizens. Policies like these ensure that economic growth benefits the population. Somaliland should adopt similar approaches to ensure that investment creates opportunities for Somalilanders.
We should send people in Somaliland to countries with which we have strong relationships so they can gain knowledge, skills, and experience, and then return home to train others. Those of us living abroad should also contribute by sharing expertise, building partnerships, and supporting the government’s efforts.
Recognition is important, but economic development is what will truly secure our future. A strong and prosperous Somaliland will be built by investing in its people, creating jobs, and making decisions that put the interests of Somaliland first. Please let’s bring this mindset to our government, because this something we can start now and reap the benefits in the near future.
