SLDC Welcomes the Recognition of Somaliland by Israel and the Opening of Embassies

The Somaliland Diaspora Council (SLDC) warmly welcomes the historic decision by the State of Israel to formally recognize the Republic of Somaliland and establish diplomatic relations through the opening of embassies in both countries.

This landmark development represents a significant diplomatic milestone for Somaliland and reflects decades of resilience, responsible governance, democratic progress, and peaceful state-building. It marks an important chapter in Somaliland’s long-standing pursuit of international recognition and strengthens its position as a credible and reliable partner within the international community.

For more than three decades, Somaliland has demonstrated that peace, stability, democratic governance, and the rule of law can flourish despite regional challenges. Through peaceful elections, effective institutions, and a commitment to security and development, Somaliland has consistently shown its readiness to engage constructively with the world.

The establishment of formal diplomatic relations with Israel signals growing international confidence in Somaliland’s sovereignty and its ability to contribute positively to regional peace, economic cooperation, innovation, and international partnership.

Somaliland’s Foreign Policy Must Remain Guided by National Interest

The Somaliland Diaspora Council firmly believes that Somaliland’s foreign policy should always be guided by one fundamental principle: the national interest of the Republic of Somaliland.

SLDC welcomes partnerships with any nation that recognizes Somaliland’s sovereignty and is committed to supporting peace, economic development, trade, investment, education, innovation, and regional security. Diplomatic engagement should always be based on mutual respect, shared interests, and equal partnership.

As Somaliland expands its international relationships, every diplomatic achievement strengthens opportunities for economic growth, foreign investment, technological cooperation, and greater participation in global affairs.

A Historic Moment for Somaliland

While diverse opinions naturally exist within every democratic society, this historic achievement should be viewed through the lens of national progress and strategic opportunity.

Recognition is not merely symbolic. It creates pathways for stronger diplomatic cooperation, expanded economic partnerships, increased international visibility, and broader engagement with global institutions.

For Somalilanders at home and across the diaspora, this moment represents both validation of decades of perseverance and renewed responsibility to continue building a peaceful, democratic, and prosperous nation.

The Role of the Diaspora

The Somaliland diaspora has played a vital role in supporting national development, promoting Somaliland’s democratic achievements, and advocating internationally for recognition.

SLDC remains committed to amplifying Somaliland’s voice across the world, strengthening international partnerships, and encouraging constructive dialogue that advances Somaliland’s rightful place within the global community.

Together, Somalilanders everywhere share a shared responsibility to support initiatives that enhance the country’s diplomatic standing, economic opportunities, and long-term development.

Looking Ahead

The recognition of Somaliland by Israel represents an important milestone—but it is only one step in Somaliland’s broader diplomatic journey.

SLDC will continue working alongside Somalilanders around the world to promote international engagement, strengthen global partnerships, and advocate for wider recognition of Somaliland’s sovereignty.

The future of Somaliland will continue to be shaped by unity, responsible leadership, peaceful diplomacy, and the unwavering determination of its people.

Recognition is not the finish line—it is the beginning.
